Here is a brief synapsis, told by her father, Tim: When our first daugher Emily was born in August of 2008, we had no idea what was coming. It wasn't until she was two hours old and the doctor sat down in front of us with a pile of papers and a concerned look that we were aware something was wrong. Emily was born with a rare condition known as Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency. In Emily's case, her right femur had not fully developed in utero. With about an eight cm discrepancy between her right and left leg, we were unsure of what our options were. The first doctor we saw told us amputation was probably easiest. He described surgeries as "heroic" and told us, "you don't want her to have a birthday surgery every year." This seemed unacceptable. We found an orthopedic surgeon named Dr. Dror Paley who had built a limb lengthening institute in Baltimore, MD. He is widely considered to be the best in the world in this particular field. He was moving his practice to Florida, but gladly met with us to see if he could help. We visited with him on a Saturday morning.
