Kean University's Department of Occupational Therapy (OT), in collaboration with the special education, therapeutic recreation and physical education departments, hosted the Special Olympics New Jersey Young Athletes Program (YAP) to introduce children with intellectual disabilities to the world of sports on April 18. More than 140 young athletes, their families and Kean University volunteers gathered in the Harwood Arena for the inaugural event. Among the special guests was Mayor Chris Bollwage of Elizabeth, NJ, who welcomed the attendees, and Kean's Cougar mascot, who interacted with the young athletes. The YAP is designed for children ages 2 ½ to 7, and serves as the foundation for play, fun and future participation in the Special Olympics program for people ages 8 and older. Kean students, faculty and staff assisted the young athletes and their families to navigate eight sports activities targeting specific basic gross motor and visual-perceptual motor skills necessary as a foundation for the child's main occupation -- play. Children learned how to control their movements to participate and play sports, as well as how to follow directions. True to its intended form, the YAP at Kean focused on and applauded the young athlete's specific abilities and aimed to provide activities that the young athletes could do at home with their siblings and parents.
